If you feel like you’re not getting what you want out of your job, then the New Year is a perfect time to jump ship and look for a new position. In fact, it’s one of the most popular times of the year for job searching—and Career Builder reports that “one in five full-time employees, or 21 percent, were looking for new jobs in January of 2014.” If you’re considering making this move, here are three signs that 2017 is the time to make it happen.

#1 You’re Underpaid

Because compensation is the primary reason that people work in the first place, it’s important that you’re paid fairly and getting what you’re worth. If you know for a fact that your current employer is paying below the industry standard or less than you’re worth and you can earn more elsewhere, then it’s probably a good move to go where the money is. This is especially true if you’ve already asked your boss for a raise and they denied it.

Besides being able to live more comfortably financially, there’s often a correlation between pay and motivation. When you’re paid well, you’re usually more motivated to give it your all and operate at a higher level, which should translate into better job satisfaction.

#2 You’re Undervalued

One of the biggest reasons that employees become discouraged or disillusioned with their jobs is because they’re not given adequate praise for their good performance. If it’s become obvious that your boss and colleagues are undervaluing your hard work, then it’s likely to diminish your morale, and you’re unlikely to experience any real job satisfaction. When this is the case, it’s a good sign that you should take your talents elsewhere.

#3 There are Major Company-Wide Changes

Change is inevitable, and healthy in many respects. However, if there are massive changes occurring on a company-wide level that are likely to cause major disruptions, it can make your life much more difficult. This is especially true if your company is facing financial challenges, and the future is looking ominous. When this is the case, your job probably isn’t all that secure anyway, and you can save yourself a lot of drama by getting off of the sinking ship—before it completely sinks!

If any of these three signs apply to you, then it’s smart to look for a new job in 2017. With any luck, you’ll find something that better suits your strengths, and you’ll be more fulfilled in the New Year.
