Becoming a certified tradesperson can seem daunting. In reality, it’s a journey that requires hard work and commitment, but is likely to be highly rewarding. So, if you’ve ever thought about the benefits of learning a trade, here are 6 steps to learn how to become a certified tradesperson.

Step 1: Decide To Pursue A Trade

The first step to anything in life is just making the choice to go ahead and do it. And this is no different. This means deciding to have a career rather than just an endless string of jobs and choosing to do something you want to do.

Step 2: Choose Your Trade

The second step is to decide what you want to do as a trade. Start by taking an honest look at yourself and some of the things you enjoy doing. If you like to build, maybe carpentry is for you. Like to fix things? Check out becoming a mechanic. There are so many options that you are sure to find something you will love to do every day.

Step 3: Research Trade Schools

There are likely a number of trade schools that fit your desired trade in your area. How do they compare? Do their students have high rates of success? How much do they cost? How long is the program? In order to continue education at a trade school, also called a technical school or a vocational school, you need to have a GED or High School diploma.

Step 4: Attend Trade School

Attending a trade school is the fourth step. One great benefit of a trade school is that you don’t need anything beyond it, because vocational schools focus on what is relevant rather than needing to take general education classes that are likely to be unnecessary for your career.

Step 5: Finish Trade School

The fifth step is completing the vocational school. How long you need to attend school is completely dependent on the trade you choose. Some can take a couple semesters, others need schooling then an apprenticeship before the last step.

Step 6: Complete Certification/Licensing

Step six, the final step, is the actual certification or licensing exam. It will test you on everything you need to know to perform the duties in your chosen field. So, each trade is different.

Unofficial Step 7: Contact Xemplar

After all of that is done there is still the matter of finding a job if you didn’t have to do an apprenticeship. One option is to look on job sites to find a place to work. This can be very time consuming and there is no guarantee that you will find a great job that way. The better alternative is to work with a tradesman recruiting company. At no cost to you, they can help you find the right employer and position for your talent and experience. Xemplar helps to connect skilled tradesmen with their dream trade jobs. Give us a call today and be well on your way to a rewarding career!
